History 196H: Sex and the City
Urbanization projects brings change to the daily lives of many groups that surround it. In 19th century Paris, Haussmannization forever changed the cultural and physical landscape of the city. The analysis of the regulations on prostitution enacted in the city and the developments to urban life illustrates the contradicting goals of the ruling elite of the city. While regulations sought to limit these sexual institutions out of the public eye; developments such as street lamps and grand boulevards allowed for these institutions to become more visible than ever. The developments also brought with it a new population with far more disposable income and demand for luxury, forcing sexual institutions to adapt to this new clientele.
