This is a 17-page research paper about the trauma that youth in the foster care systems face within foster homes and through the foster care system as a whole. This research paper is based on Foster Care in California, Speficicifclly the San Francisco/ Bay Area and the primary source of research is derived from four interviews of youth that were formally in foster care. Based on these four interviews about the youths' real-life experiences within care, the paper synthesizes the origin of foster care and traces how it is a mechanism of surveillance, differentiation, and overall gives false promises of resources and hope. This affected the youth in all areas of their lives, as explicated by their direct quotes. I also draw upon my own experiences within the foster care system and offer a few tips/ words of advice for how to change the system at the ending of the paper. Using multiple sources including a feminist view from Sarah Ahmed as well as a critical race view offered by C. Wun - this paper looks at foster care in a critical race feminist lens in order to bring out the systems that work together to oppress the youth rather than uplift them.
