In this essay, I look at artworks by Congolese artist, Sammy Baloji, specifically three of his works: Memoire (2006), Essay on Urban Planning (2013), and The Other Memorial (2015, in order to analyze how he uses his art practice to examine how the colonial past of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is still defining the present-day conditions of social life, politics, and the economy in the DRC.
