"De-historicized" is a result of a discourse among the Armenian diaspora in UC Santa Cruz , whose ancestors have immigrated to the United States as a result of the Armenian Genocide. The goal is to create a mutual discourse among the diaspora community through the recollection of ancestral histories.
Additionally, the film aims to analyze the post Genocidal constructs of a diaspora homeland. The trauma of genocide, passed down from ancestors who experienced it a century ago, has a had a dramatic influence on how an ancestral Armenian homeland is imagined and reconstructed in the mind of the diaspora. Due to the violent histories of Genocide, such imaginations are often filled with fear, violence, and a nostalgia for loss. They weave their elders’ retellings into their imaginations and speak of forgotten cities, villages, churches while seeking refuge in an imaginary landscape. Hence the film is a lyrical exploration of the social landscape of the Armenian diaspora in a post Genocide context.
