By examining primary source material from the free black newspaper, The Jamaica Watchman, this piece works to understand the way in which elite free black Jamaicans reacted to the Baptist War in 1831. The aim is to understand the way in which free black Jamaicans conceptualized race and their relationship to enslaved black people within the context of such a hugely impactful and meaningful slave rebellion.
