Film 151, Narrative Workshop
Ever since I learned that the Vietnamese village Vinh Moc lived entirely underground for six years during the American War, the image of a child growing up in the tunnels and then seeing the sky for the first time has been constantly in my mind. With this film, my goal is to evoke the feeling of overcoming fear to discover the world of light.
I also found that the character of this child was a natural analogue for my mother's experience of overcoming family adversity to make a better life for herself and then finding that this success isolated her from her family and her own former identity.
