2015 Winner: SiO2 nano-rod Distributed Bragg Reflector

Project Information
SiO2 nano-rod Distributed Bragg Reflector
Engineering
EE 195 (spring 2015)
Same material Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBR) were fabricated by depositing alternating layers(periods) of High and low index SiO2 films on glass slides to create optical notch filters. The high index layer consisted of dense SiO2 and the low index layer is porous SiO2 nano-rods grown by oblique angle deposition (OAD). The wavelength of reflected light was tuned by adjusting the layer thickness and the reflectivity was varied by changing the number of layers. Transmission data of the DBR was gathered and compared to a mathematical model. Our experimental results were very close fit to the mathematical model.
